Trim levels on the 2022 GMC Sierra 2500 HD

If you’re in the market for a Heavy Duty truck, then the 2022 Sierra 2500 HD should be high on your shortlist.  It only is it one of the most capable and reliable trucks on the market but it also comes in five different trims, making it one of the most customizable trucks on the market.

Today we take a look at Sierra’s trims in detail, but before we get into that, let’s talk a little bit about its engines.

Engine options on the 2022 GMC Sierra 2500 HD

The 2022 Sierra 2500 HD can be ordered with one in two engines. First is the standard 6.6-liter gasoline V8 engine that can produce a whopping 401 horsepower and 464 pound-feet of torque. Paired with a six-speed automatic, the V8 gas engine is an absolute beast that will tow pretty much anything you ask it to.

But, for maximum towing ability (an incredible 18,500 pounds to be exact, a full 5,500 more than the regular Sierra 1500), you need to order the diesel engine.

The turbocharged 6.6-liter diesel V8 engine comes with a 10-speed automatic and can churn out 445 horsepower and an almost unbelievable 910 pound-feet of torque.

FWD is optional on Sierra’s first three trims, the Pro, SLE, and SLT, and standard in the upper two – the AT4 and Denali.

The 2022 GMC Sierra 2500 HD Pro

The model‘s base trim is dubbed the Pro and comes with the V8 gas engine plus 17-inch steel wheels, a trailering hitch, manually adjustable trailering mirrors, a locking tailgate and spare tire carrier, a 40/20/40-split front bench seat, vinyl seats and floor coverings, manual windows and door locks, a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment display, and both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration.

A rather spartan list of features that keeps the entry price low. In our decades of experience, though, we’ve seen that most retail buyers consider buying the Sierra 2500 HD from the SLE trim and up.

The 2022 GMC Sierra 2500 HD SLE

The SLE is what many consider to be the true base trim of the Sierra 2500 and it includes all the features listed under the Pro plus 17-inch alloy wheels, upgraded exterior trim, power-adjustable, heated trailering mirrors, the Multipro configurable tailgate, an integrated brake trailer controller, cloth seats and carpeted floors, front under-seat storage, Cruise Control, power door locks, and windows, remote keyless entry, a bigger 8-inch touchscreen infotainment display, and connected services including a Wi-Fi hotspot.

Far from being lavish, the SLE does offer a decent amount of comfort and connectivity features to up the appeal of the Sierra 2500 considerably.

The 2022 GMC Sierra 2500 SLT

Sierra’s most popular trim is the SLT.  It’s also its middle trim, offering a great balance between its features list and price tag.

The SLT includes all the features listed under the SLE trim plus 18-inch alloy wheels, all-terrain tires, LED foglights, power-folding and -extending trailering mirrors, cargo bed lighting, 120-volt power outlets on the dashboard and in the cargo bed, keyless access with push-button engine start, remote engine start, dual-zone automatic climate control, leather seats, power-adjustable front seats with driver’s seat memory, heated front seats and heated steering wheel, and a high-definition backup camera with Hitch View angle.

Starting with the SLT and up the Sierra 2500 HD can compare with any luxury crossover on the market in terms of comfort, connectivity, and entertainment.

The 2022 GMC Sierra 2500 HD AT4

The AT4 is designed for off-road enthusiasts. That’s why, on top of SLT’s features list, it adds standard four-wheel drive, Hill Descent Control, off-road suspension tuning, underbody skid plates, a spray-in bed liner, front bucket seats with a center console, and ventilated front seats.

The 2022 GMC Sierra 2500 HD Denali

If you’re after luxury, then the Denali is the right trim for you. Not only does it include every feature you’d get by ordering the SLT trim but you also get perks such as 20-inch alloy wheels, a power-sliding rear window, side steps to ease cab entry and exit, premium leather seats, an upgraded driver information display, a navigation system, a Bose premium sound system, wireless smartphone charging, and a bed-view camera.

The most important leap forward coming from the Denali, though, is its enormous list of standard safety features. Many of them are also available as optional features on lower trims, but the Denali comes standard with:

  • Forward collision mitigation
  • Lane departure warning
  • Blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert
  • Surround-view camera system
  • Parking sensors
  • Safety alert seat
